TITLE ELEMENTS OF THE EDUCATIONAL PUBLICATION

A textbook should have a cover that contains a minimum of basic elements of the imprint sufficient to distinguish the publication from others: 1) information about the author (s) – initials and surname in the nominative case; 2) the title of the publication without quotation marks; 3) the place of issue of the publication, the name of the publisher and the year of issue of the publication, arranged in a column.

Title pages with imprint – a necessary element book apparatus. The imprint is the texts placed on the title page, the back of the title page and the end title page containing basic information about the publication, its brief description and individual codes that facilitate its reader’s search, as well as bibliographic processing and statistical accounting.

Title page – a sheet reflecting the necessary title elements used to identify the book as the primary source of bibliographic information, and consisting of the front and back sides.

The composition of title elements is determined by GOST R 7.0.4-2020 “Editions. Imprint. General requirements and rules for registration “.

The required elements of the title page are: overhead data, name of the author (co-authors), main title, subheading data and output data. These required elements are placed in the order shown.

Overhead data, or title elements, placed above the title proper include:

1) the name of the organization (organizations) on behalf of which the university book is published or which acts as the person responsible for its publication, or its collective author;

2) the initials and surname of the personal author (s).

If there are two or more names of organizations in the overhead data, they are drawn up in a column, taking into account the corresponding hierarchy. The name of the organization on behalf of which the publication is published is given in the officially established form. In the editions of theses and materials of scientific conferences, their organizers are indicated in the overhead data.

The author’s name (initials and surname) is given in the nominative case. If the publication has been prepared by a group of authors, the names of personal authors are given in the sequence they have adopted (for example, alphabetically, by the volume of writing, by the significance of the contribution to the work, taking into account the authority of each), while the names of two or three authors are recommended to be drawn up as in the selection (one line), and in a column, and in the presence of four or more authors – in the selection.

The main title is indicated as it is determined by the author or publisher, and is distinguished from adjacent title elements (supra-heading and sub-heading) by printing means (font emphasis). Issue of a publication without a title is not allowed.

Subtitle data or title elements, placed below the main title of the university book, include clarifications of the main title in terms of subject matter, purpose and reader purpose, type of publication, as well as recommendation stamps of the educational and methodological association (UMO), other higher organizations.

and the year of issue of the publication and are arranged in a column. The place of issue of the publication is the legal address of the publisher. The year of issue of the publication is indicated by Arabic numerals without the word “year” or the abbreviation “year”.

Mandatory elements of the title page turnover are:

classification indices and author’s mark; information about the team of authors or compilers with an indication of the sections of the book belonging to them;

information about reviewers, about the editorial board; editorial annotation (abstract);

International Standard Book Number – ISBN or International Standard Publication Number of a Musical Work – ISMN); copyright protection mark.

Classification indices are placed in a separate line in the upper left corner of the title page turnover: first, the UDC (international universal decimal classification) index, below it – the LBC (library and bibliographic classification) index, with the obligatory indication of the abbreviation of the corresponding classification scheme.

The author’s mark is placed in the same place, under the classification indices. UDC and LBC indices, the author’s mark is put down by the staff of the university library, at the final stage. The author’s mark is determined by the two-digit tables of author’s marks by L.B. Khavkina.

The names of the reviewers are placed at the top of the title page turnover, indicating their academic degrees and titles.

The names of the members of the editorial board are listed in the order established by the editorial board itself or by the publisher. The executive editor can be included in the general composition of the editorial board, or can be indicated in a separate line above it.

Names of personal authors (if there are four or more authors). The word “Authors” is placed before the names of the authors. On the back of the title page, after the name of each author in parentheses, you can indicate the section (chapter) belonging to him.

In publications for information and bibliographic purposes, a model of an annotated catalog card (МАКК) is provided, which contains a bibliographic record consisting of a title, a bibliographic description of the publication, an abstract (abstract), UDC and LBC indices, and an author’s mark. Preparation and execution of annotation and abstract – according to GOST 7.9-95 “Abstract and annotation. General requirements “, МАКК – in accordance with GOST 7.51-98” Cards for catalogs and file cabinets. Cataloging in the publication. Composition, data structure and publishing design”.

In publishing, it is customary to operate with the term “editorial annotation”. Its purpose is to briefly acquaint the reader with the content and purpose of the book, to give information about its advantages and features. It is necessary to indicate the program of which discipline the book corresponds to, give the reader’s address (for whom this book is intended). The average size of the annotation recommended by the standard is 500 characters. But, depending on the tasks of annotation, it can be different. It is allowed to type the publisher’s annotation in a smaller font.

ISBN – International Standard Book Numbering – determined according to GOST 7.0.53-2007 “Editions. International Standard Book Number” and is a mandatory fundamental element in the international book exchange and book trade. In accordance with GOST R 7.0.53-2007 and GOST R 7.0.4-2020, the ISBN is placed in the publisher’s annotation after the bibliographic description and in the lower left corner of the reverse side of the title page. ISBN is assigned at the stage of editorial and publishing preparation. The international standard edition number of a musical work (ISMN) is given in the lower left corner of the turnover of the title page or the element of the music book publication replacing it in accordance with GOST R 7.0.6

The copyright mark is provided in accordance with international legislation on the protection of intellectual property. It consists of the Latin letter © (the first letter of the Latin “Copyright”), enclosed in a circle, the name of the owner of the copyright, the year of the first edition of the book. Placed © in the lower right corner of the title page turnover.

Samples of the design of the reverse side of the title page of the textbook and collection of scientific papers are given in the appendices.
